Who invent pizza?

The modern pizza was invented in June 1889 by Raffaele Esposito, a Neapolitan chef who wanted to honour Queen Margherita of Savoy. It was the very first "Pizza Margherita", and was topped with fresh tomato, mozzarella cheese, olive oil and basil, to represent the colours of the flag of Italy.

The actual word "pizza" is first recorded as early as the year 997, in Medieval Latin. The word referred to a simple flatbread in Naples which was not actually eaten, but was used as a gauge by bakers to test the temperature of an oven.

Other sources have suggested the true origin of pizza is Greece. In ancient Greece, a common food was flat bread baked with olive oil and cheese, the basis of pizzas still served today.

There is a belief that, when Marco Polo visited China during Europe's Medieval Ages, he brought back the scallion pancake and this was a precursor to the pizza. There are many versions of this story, and little to substantiate it.

Pizza has been a stable peasant Italian dish for centuries but no one can say who actually invented the first pizza as many Mediterranean cultures have similar foods. The Greeks at least also had something similar.

Baloney !! Pizza was around long before the so-called modern pizza was invented in June 1889 by Raffaele Esposito, a Neapolitan chef. For untold generations, Italian mothers made pizza as a treat for their families. True, it wasn't like a "modern pizza", but it was there. When ever a mother would make bread, they usually had some dough left over & they'd flatten it out & top it with different food items that had available, olive oil, olives, mushrooms or even anchovies, some salt & pepper & bake it in the oven.

The word pizza was first documented in A.D. 997 in Gaeta and successively in different parts of Central and Southern Italy.
