During the reign of Seleucid ruler Antiochus IV Epiphanes, a mother and her 7 sons were arrested. The attempt was made to force them to eat pork, in effect renouncing their faith. They refused. Furious, Antiochus ordered that giant pans be heated. One by one the sons had their body parts cut off and were cooked alive over the fire, refusing to renounce their faith.
The "children's song" says, "Father Abraham had 7 sons/And 7 sons had Father Abraham/They didn't laugh, no/they didn't cry, no/All they did was go like this/with the right arm...and the left arm...and the right foot," etc. The children singing the song then wave that body part as they sing, mimicing the bodies of the sons in the pan as they are being cooked alive.
