Either George Washington Carver or the peanut. It is a common misconception that GWC invented it. Hundreds of years ago, peanuts were mashed into a pasty substance by the Aztec Native Americans. As it is known today, the patent went to Marcellus Gilmore Edson in 1884 for the initial steps necessary in production of peanut butter.
