Auguste Escoffier probably ranks as the number one French Chef of all times, which would mean that California born Julia Child ranks as the number two in that category. Her book "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" written with Simone Beck and Louise Berthollet is an essential part of the study of International Cuisine. However Child was the wife of a professional diplomat and an amateur cook though a very competent one.
Or:
Perhaps Marie Antoine Careme known as "The King of Chefs and the Chef of Kings" is more to your taste. Or Alexis Soyer or the inventor of "cuisine minceur" Michel Guerard.

Well, masterchef is a competition for AMATEUR cooks. There are other shows like Top Chef, Top Chef Masters, and Iron where the cooks are 100 times better than the ones in Masterchef. in addition the contestants in top chef seem to cook for more prestigious events/people. in my opinion masterchef has to much unnecessary drama and gossip. Shows like the other three which i mentioned show of the true attributes of an amazing cook!
