Belmondo was one of Italy's greatest Olympic athletes, having won 10 medals (2 gold, 3 silver, 5 bronze) in cross country skiing at the 1992, 1994, 1998, and 2002 Winter Games. She will always be remembered for winning the women's 15 km race at the 2002 Winter Games after having broken one of her poles with 4 km left and having to finish the race with only one pole.
She also won 5 gold medals in World Championship competition.
