There are four main factors to look at with Artificial Grass, especially if you are looking for the best artificial grass qualities. First the quality of the yarn (PE, PP, Nylon), then the face weight of the yarn (how much yarn there is), and the then the quality of the backings.

The best artificial grass I've seen around, especially including price comparisons etc., is at www.purchase-green.com. They have a 90 oz. face wight product with a premium non-infilled yarn and 40 oz. backings. So the total weight is 130 oz. I don't think there is a heavier product out there. I know the backings and yarn are premium quality and the thatch (simulated shorter grass) is polyethylene and nylon.

They also have spec sheets on each of their product pages like at the following:

This is a highly subjective question and the answer really depends on what you are looking for from artificial grass whether it's for a sports, home, or commercial application.

Some key things to look for that indicate a quality product across all of these applications include:

Material quality: for example you see on a product specification that the yarn in the artificial grass you are looking at is made from polyethylene - did you know that there are three different grades of polyethylene that are used in the manufacture of artificial grass; c4, c6, & c8? Most manufacturers use mainly c4 grade polyethylene in their products a grade of plastic usually used in the manufacture of low grade stretch films - this is primarily down to cost in a competitive market where the advantage of using higher quality materials is not necessarily something that can be seen by customers. It's something that becomes more apparent in the reduced life cycle of the product.

We recommend products made out of polyethylene but the best artificial grass will contain a much higher amount of c6 & c8 grade polyethylene than c4. Your manufacturer / supplier should be able to supply you with this information.

Product weight: this is not the most scientific of indicators but a quality product will usually be heavier. The weight is directly influenced by the amount of material in the product and as such the weight may indicate a denser product. Also take into consideration the length of the blades of grass in the products you are comparing as longer blades of grass will weigh more.

Blade profiles: this is a really good indicator of product quality. The blade profile is the shape of each different blade of grass. Blades come in a variety of profiles such as 'v' profile and 'c' profile where 'v' and 'c' indicate the shape of the blade or even just a flat / straight profile. We recommend structured profiles (such as 'v' or 'c') over flat profiles as they have been manufactured with the structure they need to support themselves which also makes the product more resilient. Flat blade profile products generally feel nice and soft when new but they look flat when they are laid and they break down quicker from not having the support of a structure. A good product will have a variety of structured and texturized blade profiles in each tuft. It costs more for manufacturers to use structured yarn (which in turn makes the blades) than to use basic flat yarn so structured blades can be an indicator that a manufacturer is conscientious about quality.

Be aware that a product with structured blade profiles will feel stiffer when new. This isn't necessarily a bad thing when you are expecting a product to last 15 to 20 years!

U.V. Stable: You can discern whether or not a product is UV stable or not by the manufacturers guarantee. This can also be an indicator of material quality as better quality coloured plastic is more UV stable than lower quality plastic. Basically if the manufacturer guarantees the product against any colour fade or breakdown then it's going to be UV stable. A common guarantee is 8 years and some manufacturers are now offering 10 year guarantees.

We recommend our own products at turf-king.com as examples of some of the best artificial grass for landscaping projects available. There are however a number of good manufacturers in the international market and if you stick with our guide above you shouldn't go too far wrong. Do synthetic lawns fade over time?

Some people claim that synthetic lawns fade over time. However, when checking with many different manufacturers they claim that fading is nonexistent to minimal.
