The Holy Spirit is the Comforter, Helper, power of God, and Spirit of truth. The Holy Spirit is sent by God and Jesus Christ to:

- help humans in their infirmities and weaknesses

- help the true Christians or the true servants of God remain steadfast and strong in their faith despite the trials

The Holy Spirit is one of the three forms of the trinity. Saint Patrick may have used the three leaflets of the clover plant to explain to the pagans that God is both one and three. The Bible also refers to the Holy Spirit as Comforter. They are three and distinct though they are unity. I cannot define it further than this. I tend to think of the trinity as three expressions of God. It is a fundamental tenet of faith. To make an analogy for atheists and those who make science their secular religion I offer this: There are some things that cannot be defined without circular references. They are simply fundamental. These things may be outside human experience and grasp so that at some point we accept them and familiarity gives us the notion that we can understand them. Some examples are: What is length or space? What is time? The square root of a negative number. Infinity. Can something be created from nothingness?

To believe in the Holy Spirit is to profess faith in the Third Person of the Most Holy Trinity who proceeds from the Father and the Son and “is worshipped and glorified with the Father and the Son”. The Spirit is “sent into our hearts” (Galatians 4:6) so that we might receive new life as sons of God.

Most Christians agree that the Holy Spirit is God. He is the third Person of the Trinity, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit, thus making the Holy Spirit God.

The Holy Spirit is a Person and not an "it". The Scriptures give us 5 evidences that the Holy Spirit is a Person.

1) The Holy Spirit is spoken of as "He" (John 14:16).

2) The Holy Spirit has intelligence (I Corinthians 2:10-11).

3) The Holy Spirit makes decisions (I Corinthians 12:11)

4) The Holy Spirit has emotions, He feels love (Romans 15:30), and grief (Ephesians 4:30)

5) The Holy Spirit is active. He does things only a Person can do. He speaks (Revelation 2:7), He intercedes (Romans 8:26), He teaches (John 14:26), He appoints (Acts 20:28), and He empowers (Acts 1:8).
