Anyone who cannot acquire adequate hydration by natural means. Anyone who's life may be in danger if they are not quickly rehydrated. Every hospital has a different SOP on whether or not they need to resort to an IV. Most people who need them are those who have lost a lot of blood, burn victim and patients who are severely dehydrated. But most of us can just get by with drinking plenty of water to get rehydrated.
