Basically an imam is the person who looks after a mosque like you have fathers in christian religion and he is responsible for keeping all the affairs of a mosque in order from orderly and timely management of prayers to the management of building every thing is basically the responsibility of the imam but you should not confuse the looking after of mosque to the looking after of a madrassah(religious school) because they may have very different systems of governance and almost all are run by a board of governance.
