The original 1978 story of the Snowman (by Raymon Briggs) did not contain a prose story; it was just a book containing images. In 1982 it was turned into an animated film, but this too did not contain words, though there was a musical score by Howard Blake.

The narrater to which you probably refer is Bernard Cribbins (also the narrator of The Wombles), in a version produced in 1983. This featured the 1982 score, interspersed with an elaboration of the story depicted by the pictures from the original 1978 book.

Several non-narrating voices have appeared in alternative productions of the story. These include Peter Auty, who sang the "Walking in the Air" song as featured in the film (the better-known Aled Jones sang on the single which reached position 5 in the UK charts a few years later), and David Bowie and Mel Smith, the latter two who have each given a spoken introduction to alternative productions.

The song, Frosty, the Snow Man, spelled both as a noun clause and as one word- Snowman, came out some time in the fifties. There were those who argued it was a satire on Macarthur- the mention of a corncob pipe, the Traffic Cop who seemed to be Frosty"s undoing was a take-off on Truman. Frosty, for some odd reason, maybe it"s borderline tragedy ( though it ends- I"ll be back again some day) was never really a popular Christmas song, though the Ronettes did a lively version!
