Secretary of State William H. Seward signed the 1867 treaty to purchase Alaska from Russia. Opposition referred to it as Seward's Folly or Seward's Icebox, as no value was seen at the time. The Klondike gold rush occurred later, in 1896.
The Gadsden Purchase is a region of Arizona and New Mexico. It was bought by the United States in a treaty signed by James Gadsden.
If you refer to World War II, Hitler(Germany) signed a pact with Stalin(Soviet Union). In 1941 after the failure of the German Airforce(Luftwaffe) to bomb the British into surrender(the Battle of Britain), Hitler promptly broke the agreement by sending his army into Russia. This invasion ultimately failed.
Russia. He did this so he didn't have to worry about Russia when he invades Poland. The agreement is signed in August and he invades Poland in September just a few days after the agreement is signed. This was no mistake by Hitler, but planned by him. As soon as he invades the British react and declare war. He miscalculated the actions of what the British would do. Within a month Poland is divided up between Germany and Russia.

Alaska was purchased from Russia by the US in 1867 for 7.2 million dollars. It was originally offered to the United States in 1859, but the purchase was delayed by the US Civil War. The territory of Alaska became a US state in 1959.
William H. Seward, Secretary of State.
Well, Alaska is part of the US. The treaty was, however, signed outside of Alaska.
US Secretary of State, William H. Seward signed a treaty with Russia agreeing to purchase Alaska on 3/30/1867. The president at the time was Johnson (NOT the one during Vietnam!). The purchase price was $7.2 million dollars - about 2 cents per acre and at the time it was referred to as "SEWARD'S FOLLY". Sentiments changed with the discovery of gold in the KLONDIKE.
The treaty was signed at 4 o'clock in the morning of March 30, 1867
Perhaps its purchase history! Read the following for more information: Russia offered to sell Alaska to the United States in 1859, believing the United States would off-set the designs of Russia's greatest rival in the Pacific, Great Britain. The looming U.S. Civil War delayed the sale, but after the war, Secretary of State William Seward quickly took up a renewed Russian offer and on March 30, 1867, agreed to a proposal from Russian Minister in Washington, Edouard de Stoeckl, to purchase Alaska for $7.2 million. The Senate approved the treaty of purchase on April 9; President Andrew Johnson signed the treaty on May 28, and Alaska was formally transferred to the United States on October 18, 1867. This purchase ended Russia's presence in North America and ensured U.S. access to the Pacific northern rim.

"The purchase agreement was signed by Seward on March, 30, 1867, and approved by the U.S. Senate May 27, 1867. President Andrew Johnson signed the final treaty the following day and the transfer was made Oct. 18, 1867, in Sitka." http://fairbanks-alaska.com/alaska-history.htm
