Whilst there were many examples of early standoff weapons used in WWII the only one that could be said to be a glide weapon was the V1 flying bomb (Known as the Doodlebug). This weapon was either launched from a ramp using rocket assistance or was air dropped from under a bomber such as the He 111.
The bomb then relied upon a pulse jet engine to propel it towards its intended target several hundred miles away and a pair of stubby wings to carry it there.
Only once the engine's fuel ran out did the bomb enter its terminal phase and begin to glide down to its target below.
For the people below the bombs path, the sudden silencing of the noisy pulse jet above meant trouble was on its way and to take cover.
