a man, most likely, because women were not allowed on the stage.
Imagine- we, the audiance, are supposed to feel for a 20-something man (romeo) playing a young boy (16-18) while hes in love with a man (Juliet) playing a young girl
We don't know who played Juliet in the debut of the play. It was one of the boys in The Lord Chamberlain's Men circa 1595, but we don't know their names. We can be pretty certain, however, that Richard Burbage played Romeo at the debut.
I don't know exactly who the role was played by, but I'm sure it was man; during Shakespeare's time women weren't usually allowed to be part of plays.

I think his greatest creation was the playwright of Romeo and Juliet.
In the end of the play, Juliet takes Romeo's dagger and thrusts it into her chest.
