To know what inspired Mufasa is to know what inspired The Lion King. The filmmakers stated William Shakespeare's Hamlet and Bambi among sources inspired The Lion King.

King Hamlet, the deceased father of Prince Hamlet, could have inspired Mufasa as both characters were both killed by their envious brothers, and gave their sons a visit as a ghost. Bambi's mother could have inspired Mufasa as both taught their sons the ways of their natural habitat, and were killed by the film's antagonist. Also, an emotional sequence follows their deaths with their child trying to reunite with them, and find out that they have passed on. Finally, the characteristics of a good leader such as having strong leadership and wisdom possibly could have inspired his character.

One theory (that Disney loosely confirmed) is that the story of The Lion King was inspired by Hamlet. In both, the evil uncle conspires to kill his own brother.

Another theory (which Disney denied) is that the movie was based on a Japanese anime TV show called "Kimba: The White Lion." There are many, many similarities between the two stories. This, of course, is the biggest controversy revolving around the movie.

Mufasa was Simba's dad in the Lion King. He was the ruler of the Pridelands. He was also killed by Scar, which Simba unfortunately had to witness. Simba laid with him for hours trying to get him to wake up, but Mufasa was fooled into a trap that Scar had set to get Simba hurt. Mufasa gave his life for his child.
