One of the best known metaphysical poets was John Donne. But before we list any more poets that fir that category, it's best to define the term "metaphysical". In its early development a metaphysical poet was one in which the spirit or emotional ties with forces within oneself were observed. They in fact attempt to analyze the spirituality of the subject..

Metaphysics did not end with Donne and his contemporaries of the 17th century. WB Yates was also part of the metaphysical line of poetry in the early part of the 20th century. The "other world" or the transcendental aspects of the human spirit were woven throughout his work. The expression of the inner spirit in poetry leads one to next move onto the fact that this spiritualism cannot be man made. It's related to inexplicable forces of the Godhead in my opinion.
