. William 1st of England the Norman, or the Conquerer was 59 when he died, 9 September 1087 in Rouens, Normandy, France. The exact date of his birth is disputed, but it was probably sometime in 1028.

There had always been strife between the Duchy of Normandy, of which William was Duke, and the French monarchy. In 1086 the strife flared into war and William returned to Normandy. In late july 1087, while seizing the village of Mantes, William's horse reared or fell and he was injured on the pommel of his saddle. He may have been ill at the time as well, he was sensitive about his weight and supposedly was on a bizarre diet of wine and brandy. He was carried to nearby Rouens, probably from infection due to ruptured intestines.

It's been claimed that his corpse litterally exploded at his funeral. Due to his weight and bloating from the infection he was too large for his coffin. When priests tried to stuff him into it, he burst, releasing some really putrid gasses and sending the mourners running for and out of doors and windows.

Exploded or not, he was burried in Caens, which had replaced Rouens some years earlier as seat of Normandy. He's not the only English king burried outside of England or even in France, but since Guy Fawkes's plot failed, he has the distinction of being the only King who blew up.

For most of Shakespeare's life, like for most or all of the lives of the people reading this, England had a queen called Elizabeth, not a king. But the first Elizabeth died in 1603, and was succeeded by the Scottish king James VI, who was James I of England.
