Who was the atheist that tried to find contradictions in the bible but ended up converting to Christianity?

This is one of the folklore tales often put up by theists to show the power of their religion. It usually goes like this:
There was an atheist (professor, student, teenager, industrialist) who was (speaking, appearing, overheard in at a party) who (laughed at, challenged, disrespected) The Bible. At that time a (young child, senior citizen, stranger who no one had noticed before) spoke up challenging the atheist. The atheist failed to prove his point, saw the error of his ways and was born again in the Lord.
None of these events has stood up to an impartial investigation.
