The most famous leader of the Soviet Union was Joseph Stalin who became the First Secretary of the Communist Part of the Soviet Union (the most powerful job) in about 1925 and had that top job (as well as the supreme military position "Marshal of the Soviet Union") until his death in 1953.
Before Stalin, the RSFSR (Russian Soviet Federal Socialist Republic) was ruled by Vladimir Lenin (as First Secretary of the CPSU) between 1917 and 1923. The RSFSR became the USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics) in about 1922.
After Stalin there were more famous leaders of the USSR, in particular;
