Comicx strips originated popularily in Newspapers commencing in the Nineties ( l890's) One of the earliest animal comic strips was Felix The Cat- by the King Feature syndicate. Felix was adapted to movie and television cartoon usage- and antedates both Mickey Mouse ( l928) and Bugs Bunny (l927) which were products of Walt Disney( Mickey Mouse, obviously) and Warner Bros. the Warner Cartoons were originally made for movies- between the acts, rewinding the main reels- etc. Hence they were short subjects. They tended to be a higher entertainment caliber than the Disney cartoons- and more mature. A man named Shepard ( English) drew the illustrations for both Wind in the Willows and Winnie-The-Pooh- He can be considered an animal cartoonist. Anotlher old timer was Howard R. Garis, who created Uncle Wiggley. Wiggley was drawn in comic book and newspaper form by different artists over the decades.
