As far as is publicly known, a total of twelve (12) human beings have walked on
the moon so far, and they have all been male Americans. No woman has been to
the moon's surface or in lunar orbit yet.

The first woman in space was Valentina Vladimirovna Tereshkova, a Soviet cosmonaut. She was on the Vostok 5 mission which launched on June 16, 1963. The first American woman in space was Sally Ride. She was on the space shuttle Challenger on mission STS-7 in 1983.

After NASA, Sally Ride became the director of the California Space Institute at the University of California, San Diego, as well as a professor of physics at the school in 1989. Sally Ride is not only the first American woman in space but she is also the youngest person to ever be sent into orbit.
