The first peace officers in what is now South Carolina was the Provincial Constables created by the John Locke in his Fundamental Constitutions per instruction of the Lords Proprietors. These men and women exist today as the South Carolina State Constables. As settlers moved west, each village that thought itself large enough generally elected or appointed a Town Marshal or Town Constable for the Village. Early Sheriffs had large territories and in the beginning was generally appointed by the territorial Governor. Later they were elected as counties became more organized. In the unorganized territories the US Marshals and the Army kept the peace. Also, you had organizations such as the Texas Rangers, Colorado Rangers, New Mexico Mounted Police, Arizona Rangers, and the California Rangers that served for various time periods and for various purposes.
In the old west, the peace officer was typically the sheriff. The sheriff was responsible for maintaining Law and Order, enforcing the law, and keeping the peace in their jurisdiction. They were elected officials who had the authority to arrest criminals, serve warrants, and oversee the local jail.

A peace officer is another term for police officer. A police officer is someone who is paid to protect and serve the people.

A Law Enforcement Officer. They may be a Police Officer, Sheriff, Marshall, Constable, Agent or- a very old term- Conservator of the Peace.
Under Florida Law no. A licensed armed security officer is not a peace officer. In the State of Florida you do not have to be sworn to have peace officer status. According to Florida Statutes 843.08 and 843.06 the word "watchman" appears in both statutes. A security officer was once called a watchman. Therefore, a licensed security officer in Florida is a non sworn peace officer.
Is it an offence to give a false report to a peace officer, and what does a peace officer do????
The Peace Officer Standards and Training program is an example of the regulatory agency. It is responsible for the licensure of peace.
