During the Cold War and the McCarthy era, the American husband and wife team of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were convicted of being spies for the USSR. They were executed in 1953, one of the few modern cases where spies were put to death.
Their death sentence was very controversial, since some people believed Ethel was not as guilty as Julius, while others doubted that either had done the things they had been accused of. On the other hand, the vast majority of Americans feared and hated the Soviet Union, and anyone accused of spying for the Soviets was regarded as an enemy. Since the government was convinced of their guilt, the execution was carried out, but to this day, there are those who believe the Rosenberg case was a miscarriage of justice, and those who are certain the two were spies who deserved their fate.
