The Mississippi is widest above its navigable portion, where it is 11 miles wide at Lake Winnibigoshish.

It reaches its widest navigable width downstream from its confluence with the Missouri River (near Alton, IL) where it is nearly 1 mile across.

It is about 1/2 mile wide at New Orleans, LA before entering its delta.

An average would be impossible to determine.

In its early course, the river is only 30 feet wide.

In some lakes formed by the river in Minnesota, it is at least 2 miles wide and arguably as much as 11 miles wide.

In the middle river, below the navigation locks, it is as narrow as 700 feet.

South of the confluence with the Missouri, it is as wide as 1 mile (divided by islands).

It is 1/2 mile wide above and near New Orleans before splitting into narrower channels in the delta.
