I don't know who wrote the poem, but I believe the actual line reads "caramba! cried the toad. Take me with you, eldest born, I'll help you catch the thief by dawn!" and it was written in a rhyming book for children which I read, hmm, must have been over thirty years ago when I was at infant school in England
If you find any information on the author and the book couold you please let me know.
Thanks.
Regards,
Bob
I don't know, but the line "Caramba! Cried the toad" was used repetitively in a musical (?) TV show we watched at Primary School in Tasmania in the 1960's, and the line has haunted me ever since, so I'd like to find out!
(From Jon G) The line actually comes from "The Midnight Thief", a musical for children which you might be able to order on Amazon.
