a temporary fix is to disconnect the positive battery pole from the battery for a few seconds. then reconnect, it and try to engage 4x4 again. this used to happen to 2000 ranger 4x4 that i drove for work. only thing was that it would hardly ever go into 4x4 LOW. good luck
