All the homes in a country like the UK are connected to the national grid, which means that all the power plants run synchonously, at exactly the same speed. When one grid has to export power to another, DC links are used, which removes the need to synchronise both grids, which would be extremely difficult in most cases because an AC link would not be able to carry the heavy synchronising currents.
