A Denial of Service attack (DoS) is an attack that attempts to block access to a certain resource. This can be done several different ways. What used to be the most popular was to spoof a ping from a target to the network broadcast, having every machine on that network reply with an echo response. Another typically used DoS is to send packets with the syn flag to a server, initiating a session, but not sending a packet with the ack flag, thereby leaving the server in an unresponsive state as it waits for responses.

A denial of service (DoS) attack is an incident in which a user or organization is deprived of the services of a resource they would normally expect to have. In a distributed denial-of-service, large numbers of compromised systems (sometimes called a botnet) attack a single target.

"Denial of service attacks" is when someone is trying to hack into your system using some sort of software that is trying to guess the username/password...

For example, in Windows XP find Event Viewer under Computer Management in the Control Panel. Then look for System Viewer; it will show who logged in, who logged out, and if someone is constantly trying to log in. If a Network Administrator finds someone who tried to log in, say, 100 times, then he can block that IP address from logging in at all.

A distributed denial-of-service attack is a denial-of-service attack that is launched from several computers simultaneously. This increases the load on the server that is being attacked.

there are 2 types of attack, permanent and not permanent, I did this to any website long time ago, got in little trouble. so this no-permanent is you attack and crash a website for some hours then it is fine again, but permanent, it wont be fine after some hours. it will never be good again

Basically a DDoS is when an attacker uses his/her botnet (a network of infected computers) to flood your internet with packets, causing you to have an internet overload and be unable to connect to the internet.

Denial of service : By using a computer to flood a given Web site with so much useless traffic (e-mail, interactions, etc.) the site becomes frozen and stops the regular service thus losing business for a period.

A Denial of Service (DoS) attack or more commonly a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack does not have to do with trying to hack in by guessing username and password combinations. Instead, it has to do with "busying out" the router or server so that it cannot respond to anyone else. This effectively makes it so that the Internet-connected resource cannot provide its intended service.

The difference between a Denial of Service and Distributed Denial of Service attack is the number of participants in the attack. If it is only a single person, it is a DoS attack. If it is two or more, then it is a DDoS attack.

A common type of DDoS attack is to send an overwhelming number of ping requests to the target server from dozens, hundreds, thousands, even tens of thousands of DDoS attack participants. The victim server cannot handle all the requests in a timely manner, so it starts dropping packets/ignoring requests until it can get caught up but that doesn't happen while the participating machines continue the onslaught.

How this happens is by the participant machines generally being "enslaved" by some type of virus or other type of malware that is on the machine. A computer infected with such software is referred to as either a slave or a zombie. The way to get rid of it (once you realize that you have such an infection) is the way you get rid of any other type of virus/infection: scan the machine with good antivirus and anti-malware software.

As for what Laary C mentioned, that is just a standard hacking attempt. If the machine is set up correctly, it locks out the account after a certain number of failed login attempts anyway, so it is not much of a concern. However, tracking down the IP address can be useful if the hacker is not smart enough to be able to vary his IP address on a whim. However, if a hacker is smart enough to try to get into a machine, then chances are he is smart enough to know how to use a proxy service or VPN to alter his IP address and, therefore, get around any IP address blocks that may have been set up from earlier hack attempts.

Denial of service attacks are carried out in in such a way that a bunch of computers use special kind of softwares and send unlimitted dump messages and keep the server busy.....

What does DDoS stand for?

A distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack is a malicious attempt to disrupt the normal traffic of a targeted server, service or network by overwhelming the target or its surrounding infrastructure with a flood of Internet traffic.

What happens with Distributed Denial of Service attacks?

It is an assault on a network that floods it with so many requests that it is either slowed or completely interrupted. Unlike a virus, which can cause severe damage to databases, a denial of service attack interrupts network service for a long amount of time.

What is protection for a Denial of Service Attack?

A decent firewall will block a Denial of Service Attack (DOS) from sending requests from a single IP address, but a Distributed Denial of Service Attack (DDOS) which is sent from thousands to millions of IPs might not be blocked however most firewalls will only allow a certain amount of connections which is not nearly enough to make your machine deny you service, however it might make your machine run a bit slower.
