Well some people like poems because they sooth you and make you feel calm. Also some poems can be funny i had to do a project just yesterday on poems and I read a poem made by this really good author but i forgot his name.
Poems are written to express emotions, thoughts, and experiences in a creative and artistic way. They allow poets to convey complex ideas in a condensed and powerful form, often using imagery and metaphor to evoke emotions and provoke thought in the reader.

Also to fix the language on mind and to get the momentum and elevation poetry imparts. Moreover poetry impregnates human mind with the sweetest of things, that is music.
Here are some other reasons:
What makes poetry appealing to human mind and intellect is a very ancient question, much discussed, answered and the answers analyzed through centuries. None has reached the level of completeness to give the questioner full satisfaction. But a few factors do remain which nearly explains human mind's susceptibility and affinity towards poetry. Every form of literature is just human thoughts and ideas- prose, poetry or drama. But as Carlyle put it, poetry is musical thought and that is a great difference. Human mind and body is naturally tuned and calibrated to music and that is one reason for the popularity of poetry. Except poetry, nothing in literature can make you sing, and man likes to sing. Poetry elevates human mind. It imparts velocity, speed and momentum to the otherwise inert and dreary human mind. Unlike other forms of literature, this ability of poetry to make human mind to move and be kinetic, and at times with the apt poetry, pushed to take off like an aero plane, is a rare and pleasant experience which accounts for the acceptance of poetry above all other literary forms.
I think people like poerty because some just enjoy writing them.
Lotte 347 says: Adittionally, poems are a way to express feelings through words. It is very effective.
Why not? People read it because they like it!
