Best Answer

There are two primary reasons why Sequoia have been known to live nearly 4000 years. The first is the thickness of their bark, which protects their important internal vascular system (used for transporting water and nutrients throughout the tree) from insects, disease and fire. The second is the nature of their root system, which are shallow but very wide and allow the tree to mine a vast expanse of water and nutrients.

Giant sequoias are so big, because they live a very long time and grow quickly. They survived the logging years in the US, because their wood was not useful. It was brittle and would basically shatter when felled by early loggers.
