Why are total solar eclipses so much shorter than total lunar eclipses?

Because of the size of the moon and the distance of the sun, the moon can only cover the sun for a very short time. Because the moon is much closer to Earth and Earth is much bigger than the moon, it casts a big shadow, larger than the size of the moon itself, so it takes it longer to pass through it.

∙ 11y agoBecause the Earth is much larger relative to the Moon than the Moon is relative to the Sun. In a total solar eclipse the Moon will only just cover the Sun so a slight change in position means that you will only see a partial eclipse whereas the Earth will cause a much larger shadow relative to the Moon so a difference in location will not affect it so much.
