Because they are the largest lakes in the United States, the largest in North America, and some of the largest lakes in the world. They are all clumped together. They were formed over millions of years as glaciers from Canada advanced and receded, carving out deep basins. Over time, these filled with fresh water and formed The Great Lakes.
When Lewis and Clark found them, they thought they had discovered another ocean. Also they are just enormous.

The five lakes you are inerested in are the Greta Lakes. Only Lake Michigan is entirely in the US. Lakes Superior, Huron, Erie and Ontario straddle the US/Canadian border. There is a sixth lake in the group (St. Clair) which is considerably smaller, it is also on the border.
