The New York Yankees started out in Maryland, where they were called the Baltimore Orioles.* That was their hometown and their official name, for the years 1901-1902. Then the franchise moved northwards, to New York, where the team took the name New York Highlanders, in 1903.

While officially known as Highlanders, local sportswriters often referred to the team as the Yankees or Yanks, because it was much easier to type and fit in headlines. The name 'Yankees' comes from the fact that they were the American League team, and Americans are often referred to as Yanks by the British. So the same thought process was applied. The team decided in 1913 to make its nickname as Yankees its official name.

*The name was taken up again in Maryland, in 1954. But the newly formed Baltimore Orioles only shared the same name with the original team that went on to become the New York Yankees.

The Mets name is short for Metropolitans ... New York is part of the Metropolitan area or better known as the Tri- State this region of the United States has the denies population and encompasses three States New York ,Northern New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

The Mets got their name from an old 1880's Baseball Club the New York Metropolitans. Their colors were chosen to try to appeal to the large contingent of former Giants and Dodgers fans. Orange for the Giants and Blue for the Dodgers. They are also the colors of the New York City flag.

The Yankees became the Yankees because the British originally called the Colonists Yanks, referring to the Revolutionary War time.

The Original name of the now World Famous New York Yankees was the New York American Baseball Club. Nicknames were a Newspaper driven event in 1903. The original nickname of the club was the Highlanders. This was due to the location of Hilltop Park (on Broadway and 161st, Manhattan. Also, it was meant as a bit of a slur. In 1903, the New York Giants were the great baseball team in New York City and the new club were considered "invaders" by the press. Therefore the Highlanders also referred to the British Infantry that held New York during the revolutionary war (Gordon's Highlanders). The press also used the term "Yanks" or "Yankees" because it was easier to fit in the headlines. The Highlanders moved our of Hilltop Park in 1913, sharing the Polo Grounds with The NY Giants. Since they no longer played at the Hilltop, they officially changed the name to the New York Yankees in 1913.

New York YankeesThe Yankees were originally called the New York Highlanders from 1903 through 1912. Newspapers referred to them by their nickname, Yankees, which was a term used to describe Americans who lived in the North. Headlines would say things like "Yankees win opening game from Boston, 2-1". The name got more popular in those 10 years and when the team changed ballparks in 1913 they exclusively used the name Yankees and soon after they officially changed their name to The New York Yankees.

The Yankees started out as the Baltimore Orioles. When the Baltimore franchise went bankrupt after 3 years, they then became the Highlanders. They played in a hastily constructed, all-wood park at 168th Street and Broadway. Because the site is one of the highest spots in Manhattan, the club was known as the "Highlanders" and their home field "Hilltop Park". They were renamed the "Yankees"after that name began popping up in newspapers, whose editors were searching for a shorter name for their headlines. The name was officially changed in 1913. As far as I can gather, the name, "The Yankees", was more of a derogatory name in origin. The information I have given comes from Yankees.com, in their "History" section. You can also read this and more at www.geocities.com/cdk1976/Yank01.html .It is found in the "Statistics of a Champion" narrative.

New York has always been considered the American town because people docked in on Ellis island and if they were allowed to be in they were considered Yankees. That's how the New York Yankees got their name!

Originally, the New York Yankees were named the New York Highlanders. However, this title was too long for the newspaper headlines. They earned the shorter name, the "Yankees", to shorten the name for the headlines.

The team moved to New York in 1903, and played at Hilltop Park in Manhattan. The ballpark was built at one of the highest points in Manhattan and so the team was then called the Highlanders.

As early as 1904 The press began to refer to the team as "the Yankees." The name Yankees was more commonly used in the coming years, and after the Highlanders moved to the Polo Grounds the reference to the team as the Highlanders no longer applied as they no longer played at a higher elevation. The team name was then changed to the more commonly used name the Yankees in 1913.

The Mets name is short for Metropolitans ... New York is part of the Metropolitan area or better known as the Tri- State this region of the United States has the denies population and encompasses three States New York ,Northern New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

The name "Mets" was selected for several reasons (all a shortened version of Metropolitans):

  1. At the time of expansion, the team's already existing name corporate name was "New York Metropolitan Baseball Club, Inc."
  2. It recalled the name ("Metropolitans") of an earlier New York baseball team in the American Association that played from 1880 to 1887
  3. Reflected one of the commonly used terms used to describe New York City residents
  4. Mets was a natural fit for newspaper headlines - the main news distribution vehicle in the late 50's/early 60's
  5. Name had enormous approval from fans and the press

Throughout much of their tenure as the Highlanders, the logo was variations of a stylized N and Y, which lay separately on either side of the jersey's breast. In 1905, the two locked for one season, but not in the way used today. It wasn't until 1909 that the team changed to the familiar interlocking NY (originally designed by Tiffany & Co. in 1877, an insignia that would become the famous New York Yankees "NY" logo was struck on a medal of honor by Tiffany & Co. and issued to the first NYC police officer shot in the line of duty. The Yankees adopted the logo in 1909. ) that would be the team logo long after the team became known as the Yankees, and would continue to be the cap insignia until today.
