compensating winding is used for equal load sharing of two generators running in parallel. while interpole winding is used to minimise the effect of armature reaction by supporting the main field.
compensating winding is the one which is connected in series with armature winding & current flows in reverse direction to that of in armature .therefore the flux produced by this winding is such that to compensate armature reaction(effect of armature flux on main flux).hence voltage drop due to armature reaction reduces so terminal voltage of dc generator increases
for neutralising "CROSS MAGNETISING EFFECT"

when the field winding of a running dc shunt motor suddenly breaks open the motor fails to run because in the motor the stationary winding is armature and rotatory is field winding
it is the flux which is flowing opposite to the main field flux and demaganetize it... in order to eliminate this demagnetiszing component we have to connect the compensating winding in series with the armature winding which develop the flux in it oppose to the demagnetizing component
In D.C Shunt motor, the field winding is connected parallel with the armature winding.. If you remove the supply to armature winding, the motor will stop after some time.
that depends on,motor size, number of coils, company, and wire gauge. you can make a simple dc motor with just 10 winding or less. it would be very low on torque and speed though.

Because tests on a dc motor are always done using dc.
when the field winding of a running dc shunt motor suddenly breaks open the motor fails to run because in the motor the stationary winding is armature and rotatory is field winding
A shunt DC motor connects the armature and field windings in parallel or shunt with a common D.C. power source. This type of motor has good speed regulation even as the load varies, but does not have the starting torque of a series DC motor

To start an induction motor we have to excite field. The excitation is done by connecting the DC supply to the field winding's.

Because it's easy to control the speed and torque of the motor.
