- Liberal interpretation: the structures of political institutions, especially through law, promote men to rise in politics and not women.
- Socialist interpretation: the disadvantaged socio-economic position of women hold them back from participating or being accepted widely in politics.
- Radical interpretation: the nature, theory, and language of politics themselves are imbued with a natural affinity to men, and this restricts women from becoming a part of them.
