The atomic bomb was developed and built towards the end of WW2. The purpose of the bomb was to cause enough death and destruction that the country it was used would immediatly surrender. With this in mind, the US dropped the first atomic device on Nagasaki and Hiroshimo in Japan, 1945 ending the war.
