The fundamental reason behind this is due to vast difference in religious practices in that the Islamic religion is a montheistic religion and the resultant differences would more than likely be unmanageable between a married couple sharing such vastly different views.

The main reason is simply God command per Quran for a Muslim man to be entitled to marriage with either A Muslim, Christian, or a Jewish woman. The justification above is valid of course.
