Oceans aren't good places to look for fossils; the salt water can, over long ages, wear away the fossils. Some former ocean bottoms which are now dry land can be good fossil hunting, because as the silt settles over the dead plant or animal, it can seal in the material.

River beds are sometimes great places to look, because the running water can wear away the dirt that has buried the animal or plant.
