Brigham Young lead members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (commonly called "Mormons") from their homes in Nauvoo, Illinois because the Illinois State Militia requested they leave the state by February, 1846. They crossed the Mississippi river into Iowa on February 2, and stayed in Nebraska for one year before moving on to Salt Lake City, Utah.
There had been a lot of mob violence against the church members at the time (including the murder of the church's prophet, Joseph Smith, and other church leaders), and the State no longer was willing to put up with the violence. They repealed the Nauvoo Charter and asked the Saints to leave by February, so they did.
The Mormons had been kicked out of other places before Nauvoo due to mob violence, including Kirtland, Ohio and Jackson County, Missouri. The governor of Missouri even issued an extermination order against them in 1838.

Utah became a state in 1896, but Brigham Young died in 1877. Brigham Young moved to the area because the Mormons had been kicked out of their homes in Missouri and Illinois. Joseph Smith had previously said that they would find peace in the Rocky Mountains, so Brigham lead the people there.

Brigham Young was born into a farming family in Vermont, so naturally he spent much of his childhood doing farm chores. Some homes in New England today still boast mantlepieces and staircase railings built by Brigham Young.

Why did Brigham Young decide to find more land?

For Brigham Young, it wasn't really about finding more land. It was about finding a safe place for the members of the church where they wouldn't be persecuted and killed. Mobs had killed many people and driven them out of their homes, burning buildings and destroying their property in the places where they had lived before, so Brigham Young was working with God to try to find a place where the people could be safe, and he led them to the Salt Lake valley.

When Brigham Young learned that the US army was marching towards them, he instructed all the people to leave and head south.
