The Bay was in fact the Docks area of Cardiff. In the early 1940 to 1960 the area was very industrial with coal and steel being shipped from the Valleys. The area was a hard place to live with many differing cultures there. People who lived there were used to regular street fights, pubs pouring out with drunken visitors and dockers plus there were high levels of prostitution and crime in the area. However, in the late 60 and early 70's the docks declined with the lack of work coming from the vallies. Coal mines were closed as were many of the huge steel plants in the south of the country. Work for dockers became scarce and unemployment rocketed. This led to businesses leaving the area of closing, dock areas became abandoned and the area became very rundown. With internal investment from the Welsh Assembly and Europe new types of industries were located there, new small buildings aided and of course domestic living areas developed . The bay was they marketed as the place to live.
