No one really knows why. One proposed theory is that he left his family because he found out his wife was having an affair (which brought Edgar Allan Poe's half sister into the world). It seems common knowledge that his wife was a better actor than he was, and he might have wanted to get away from that reminder. His problems with alcohol may have been a factor as well.
