It is strange how he got selected. Technically speaking, he was kind of forced into the presidency. Henry Cabot Lodge nominated him for the republic party after Eisenhower told Truman, he was a republican. Then Eisenhower was convinced that he had to be president after Truman submited his budget with a $14,000,000 deficit and Robert Taft wanted to draw troops from NATO, something Eisenhower saw as a way to combat communism, rearm European countries, and to boost moral in Europe. Taft's decision to try to take U.S. troops from NATO was the impetus for Eisenhower's willingness to become dedicated to running for President.

Eisenhower had a very strong personality, while his opponent, Adlai Stevenson, did not. The American people thought this was a sign that Eisenhower could stand up to communists better than Stevenson.
