From an "Original Sin" perspective: When Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden, they doomed the entire race to death. Under the Law (as seen in Genesis--Cain and Able), a sacrifice was necessary to propitiate the sin of the person. While the sacrifice of a blemish free animal, typically a lamb or young goat, was sufficient on a temporary basis, a permanent sacrifice was necessary. There was no worthy permanent sacrifice but that of Jesus Christ, the Son of God and a part of the Trinity. He was born to die for the sins of all mankind.
How He died was commonplace for criminals of the first century people under the thumb of the Roman Empire. Criminals were beaten and then hung on a cross to die a slow and horrendously painful death. After death the bodies were left for days afterward for the birds to eat away the flesh. This sent a very powerful message to people that this is what happens when you cross the Empire.

Who says he would die? The reason they whipped him 39 times is that according to the law a person should be whipped 40 times less one, which equals 39.

No, the apostle Paul was not whipped in the same way as Jesus. Jesus was flogged before his crucifixion, while Paul experienced beatings and whippings on separate occasions during his missionary journeys. Both men suffered for their beliefs, but in different circumstances.
Jesus was whipped as part of his crucifixion, which was a form of punishment and torture used by the Romans. The scourging was meant to weaken the victim before crucifixion and inflict additional pain and humiliation. It was a common practice during that time.
They beat him, whipped and slashed him to the bone and pout a crown of thorns on his head. And mocked him about being the messiah.
