It was not uncommon for defeated generals to commit suicide. This would avoid the consequences of defeat, which could be harsh punishment or execution by the victors. It was also considered a gesture of honour. Cleopatra also committed suicide.
Octavian took the children of Marc Antony and Cleopatra VII, Alexander Helios and Cleopatra Selene II and Ptolemy Philadelphus to Rome. He paraded them during his triumphal celebrations in golden chains which were so heavy that they could not walk. This outraged the Roman crowd. As a result, Octavian got Octavia minor to adopt them. Octavia was Octavian's second elder sister and she had been father Mark Antony's wife.
Octavian had Caesarion, the son of Julius Caesar and Cleopatra, killed. Caesarion was possibly the only son of Caesar. Since Octavian based the legitimacy for his bid to power of being the adoptive son of Caesar and his heir, Caesarion was a potential rival to get rid of.
