The Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, is only one of many NASA Centers of Excellence, though its fame as the primary site for Manned Flight Mission Control Operations and Astronaut training has kept it at the front of the public eye.
JSC's location was no accidental choice; it was strictly political, though NASA did get a good deal out of it. However, the bottom line is that then-Texas Senator (later Vice President) Lyndon B. Johnson was influential in assuring passage of the National Aeronautics and Space Act, which established NASA in 1958. Later, as Vice President to JFK, he used his influence to have NASA's Mission Control and Astronaut Corps training center established in Texas. JSC was renamed in his honor in '73 after he passed away that year.
