Well mostly because John Paul the first died. I believe one reason was because he was younger and would be Pope for awhile.Pope John Paul !! was elected pope by the Cardinals  after the death of the Pope who preceeded him.   We just finished witnessing the election of Pope Francis a couple of weeks ago... It is a beautiful procedure.

The Catholic Church believes that each Pope is selected by the Holy Spirit. We do not really know why the Holy Spirit chooses a particular person. There have been 16 Popes named Gregory. 64. St. Gregory I (the Great) (590-604)

89. St. Gregory II (715-31)

90. St. Gregory III (731-41)

101. Gregory IV (827-44)

138. Gregory V (996-99)

148. Gregory VI (1045-46)

157. St. Gregory VII (1073-85)

173. Gregory VIII (1187)

178. Gregory IX (1227-41)

184. Blessed Gregory X (1271-76)

201. Gregory XI (1370-78)

205. Gregory XII (1406-15)

226. Gregory XIII (1572-85)

229. Gregory XIV (1590-91)

234. Gregory XV (1621-23)

254. Gregory XVI (1831-46)

He became pope because he was elected by at least a 2/3 majority of the cardinals participating in the papal conclave who were guided by the Holy Spirit.

Who and when was the last retired pope?

Prior to Benedict XVI in 2013, it was the year 1415, when Pope Gregory XII resigned..AnswerNever. A Catholic (It's just Catholic, not Roman Catholic. Roman is an epithet first commonly used in England after the protestant revolt to describe the Catholic Church. It is never used by the official Catholic Church.) Pope can not retire. The few pope that have renounced the papacy have RENOUNCED it, not retired. Pope Gregory XII, above was the last pope to renounce the papacy, before that it was Pope St. Celestine V who renounced the papacy in 1294.
