At least at first, the attraction was physical. But he must have noted her quick wit in responding to his Sonnet at the party. Later, in the garden, he must have been impressed by her directness, lack of guile and clarity of thought, as well as a more revealing glimpse of her physical attributes. In a world where romance was a lot of phony posturing, like Rosaline's "vow of chastity", and Romeo's affected melancholy, the directness of Juliet must have been like a blast of fresh air to him: stimulating, bracing, intoxicating.
