It was having a difficult time controling the area which was filling up with escaped slaves, criminals, American settlers and rampaging Indians. As a part of the settelment a clean border was established between Louisiana and Tejas and the US gave up any claim to California. The price was right and the purchase was completed.

They wanted to settle boundary issues from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean.

The Adams-Onís Treaty of 1819 settled the boundary disputes between Spain and the U.S. The U.S. promised not to make a claim on Texas. Spain ceded Florida to the U.S., and the two countries agreed upon a border. Spain also gave up claims to the Oregon Territory.

Florida was cut off from the rest of Spanish possessions in North America. It was hard to defend since it had such a long border with the US. It was better to give it up than risk a war.
