To seek revenge. King Hrothgar (King of the Danes) aided Beowulf's father (Ecgtheow) and heard tales that a beast was wreaking havoc on the Danes. So Beowulf and 14 of his bravest warriors went to brave the beast. He also does it for personal glory and fame.

From the original story (but in my OWN words):

After Grendel's arm is ripped by Beowolf he flees. Hrothgar and the people celebrate and is having a feast for Beowolf. Then Grendel's mother appears, eats a warrior and gets Grendel's arm. Soon after Beowolf follows her to the lair where Grendel and the mother lives. Inside Beowolf and Grendel's mother are in a terrible underwater fight Beowolf's sword is useless so with his superhuman strength he picks up a giant sword and kills Grendel's mother. Then he kills Grendel.

I also have to add that movies are totally different!
