Most of the first colonists did not know anything about farming and the local climate and conditions did not make things easier. Most of them were totally dependent on food supplies shipped from England which were (too) slow in arriving and often totally insufficient.

So many colonists died in Jamestown due to diseases and conflicts with natives in the area. This was a harsh environment which had very few of the comforts and conveniences associated with their homeland.

There were a couple causes for why the people of Jamestown left. The main reasons were strained relationships with the local Native Americans, drought, and a host of several diseases carried by mosquitoes and caused by poor water and other items that caused colonists to starve and die.
