Massachusetts grew quickly from its origins in Plymouth Colony. Great numbers of new settlers kept arriving on ships from England, and as the settlements filled up and farm land became scarcer land grants were requested to form new towns. Many new towns were founded from the 1600s on, and people moved west settling more and more towns. They needed room to build homes and businesses and farms.
What caused people to leave the Massachusetts Bay Colony is that church leaders or ministers did not take ideas from their own. Some were forced out of Massachusetts.
Thomas Hooker was forced to leave the Massachusetts Bay Colony. He had to leave when he disagreed with the Puritan leaders.
